Helen Valentine

Attending Veterinarian

Dr. Helen Valentine, the Director of the Division of Laboratory Animal Medicine at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine, has been named Director of the Animal Care Program (ACP) at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, pending approval from the Board of Trustees. She began duties as the campus Attending Veterinarian (a role formerly known as the “Institutional Veterinarian”) in summer of 2023.

Dr. Valentine, who is also a Research Associate Professor in Medical Microbiology, Immunology, and Cell Biology, earned a bachelor’s degree in biology and psychology from New York University, a DVM from Tufts University, and a master’s degree in comparative biomedical sciences from Cornell University, where she also completed her residency program in laboratory animal medicine. She is a Diplomate of the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine. She served as an assistant director of the Division of Animal Resources at Illinois from 2016-2020 before joining SIU in 2020.
